Paper of the Week: Sleeping Beauty

A biological and philosophical conundrum for you as this week’s Paper of the Week. David Haig has just published a fun and thoughtful paper on the “Sleeping Beauty” problem and how it forms a strong analogy with the problem of relatedness in triploid endosperm tissues in plants such as rice (obviously). There is also an analogy with another probability puzzle, namely the Monty Hall problem, but we’ll keep goats out of it for the moment.

David’s paper is here: http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10539-015-9503-1

As well as being interesting in its own right, I’m also interested in why very smart people disagree over puzzles such as this (and stuff in general). But more on that to follow…
