Sue and I are just back from Rick Harrison’s memorial at Cornell over the weekend. Although a sad occasion, it was also a joyous one, with many, many happy memories and anecdotes. And thanks to Wink and Amy for putting us up and being such gracious and fun hosts. It was delightful to meet Rick and Ellen’s twin daughters, and also great – if slightly awe-inspiring – to see Rick academic lineage so artfully drawn out for us (see below). Via grad students and post-docs, and then their students/post-docs, Rick influenced over 700 scientists (this does not include undergrads etc). I am very happy that my own academic family tree overlaps with Rick’s to just a tiny extent, via Laura Ross, who is a fully-fledged branch of her own, budding off Ben Normark. Here’s to Rick.
